FIRST DENTAL VISITS

A calm, positive start at the dentist

Your child’s first visit is about building familiarity as much as checking their smile. We take the time to introduce the room, the dental chair and our team, then move at a pace that suits your child’s age and confidence.

What to expect

A friendly introduction

Your child can meet the dentist and become familiar with the treatment room before we begin.

Gentle check

When they are ready, we assess their teeth, gums, bite and dental development.

Practical advice for parents

We answer your questions and provide practical tips for home care and healthy habits.

Positive experiences

Our goal is for your child to feel safe, comfortable, and even excited to come back.

When should my child visit?

Australian guidance recommends a dental visit when your child’s first tooth appears or by their first birthday. If your child is older and has not visited yet, it is never too late to begin.

We're here to help

Each child is different, and we adapt each visit to their age, confidence and individual needs.

How often should my child have a check-up and clean?

We recommend a check-up schedule based on your child’s oral health and individual needs. Regular visits also help build familiarity with dental care.

Check-ups & Cleans

Healthy habits today, healthy smiles for life.

Regular check-ups and cleans help your child's teeth and gums stay healthy, support good oral-hygiene and catch any small issues early – before they become bigger problems. We adapt visits to your child’s age, confidence and needs.

What's included

Thorough examination

We check your child's teeth, gums, bite and jaw development to make sure everything is on track.

Professional clean

We gently remove plaque and tartar, alongside advice to help your child care for their teeth at home.

Fluoride protection

A fluoride treatment helps strengthen enamel and protect against tooth decay.

Personalised advice

We share tips and guidance for healthy habits at home – tailored to your child.

Early detection, better outcomes

Everyday dental care for growing smiles

From baby teeth through the teenage years, our Varsity Lakes dental team provides preventive and everyday care to help keep growing smiles healthy. Each appointment is adapted to your child’s age, confidence and individual needs, with clear guidance to help your family maintain healthy habits at home.

What general children’s dentistry may include

Care is tailored to your child, with a focus on prevention, comfort and long-term oral health.

Dental examinations and oral health assessments

Monitoring baby teeth, adult teeth, gums and bite development

Guidance on brushing, diet and healthy dental habits

Fissure sealants where clinically appropriate

Why ongoing dental care matters

Regular care allows us to follow your child’s development, reinforce healthy routines and respond to concerns before they become more complicated.

Track the development of baby and adult teeth

Identify small concerns before they become more complex

Build familiarity and confidence through positive visits

Give parents practical advice for every stage

Preventive care, tailored to your child

Every child is different. We take the time to understand their needs, explain what we find and discuss any recommended care before treatment begins, so you can make informed decisions about their dental health.

CUSTOM SPORTS MOUTHGUARDS

Protection made to fit their smile

We can create custom sports mouthguards for children and teenagers, matched to their age, developing smile and the sport they play. A secure, comfortable fit makes the mouthguard easier to wear while helping protect their teeth and mouth from sporting injuries.

What a custom mouthguard helps protect

A properly fitted sports mouthguard helps absorb and spread the force of an impact that might otherwise injure your child’s teeth or mouth.

Help reduce the risk of chipped, fractured or knocked-out teeth

Cushion the lips, cheeks and other soft tissues

Provide protection during both training and competition

Support active children in contact and collision-risk sports

Choosing the right mouthguard

Varsity Smiles manufactures three levels of custom mouthguard so protection can be matched to your child’s age and the sport they play.

Single Laminate: For children aged 5–12 playing sports such as basketball, soccer and netball.

Double Laminate: For ages 13 and over playing sports such as AFL, rugby and hockey.

Boxing or fighting guard: Three-layer protection for ages 13 and over participating in boxing, taekwondo or kickboxing.

Personalised colours: Single and mixed colour options are available, depending on the selected mouthguard type.

A fit designed around growing teeth

We assess your child’s teeth, bite and stage of development before their mouthguard is made. Because growing smiles change, the fit should be checked over time so we can advise when adjustment or replacement is appropriate.

CHILDREN’S ORTHODONTICS

Guiding growing smiles into alignment

We assess how your child’s teeth, bite and jaws are developing and explain whether orthodontic treatment may be helpful. Depending on their needs and stage of development, care may involve monitoring, Invisalign clear aligners where suitable, or coordinated treatment with a local orthodontist for fixed braces.

What orthodontic care may include

Every recommendation begins with an assessment of your child’s developing smile and individual needs.

Assessment of tooth alignment, bite and jaw development

Monitoring crowding, spacing and how adult teeth are emerging

Invisalign clear aligner treatment where clinically suitable

Braces

Why an early assessment can help

An orthodontic assessment can provide useful clarity before all of your child’s adult teeth have appeared.

Identify developing alignment or bite concerns

Determine whether treatment is needed now or simply monitored

Plan the timing of care around growth and dental development

Give parents clear options, expected timing and next steps

When should my child have an orthodontic assessment?

Australian guidance recommends an initial orthodontic assessment between 7 and 10 years of age. This does not mean treatment must begin straight away – often the most appropriate next step is simply monitoring their development until the timing is right.
