Assessment & treatment planning

Dental symptoms do not always reveal their cause on their own. Before recommending treatment, your dentist will assess the affected area and build a clearer picture of what is happening.Depending on your concern, this may involve:

Discussing your concern

We’ll ask about your symptoms, when they started and any relevant medical or dental history.

Dental examination

Your dentist will examine the teeth, gums and surrounding tissues and assess the area causing concern.

X-rays or imaging where required

Dental X-rays or other imaging may be recommended where clinically appropriate to obtain information that cannot be seen during a visual examination alone.

Explaining the findings

We’ll explain what we have found in straightforward terms and give you the opportunity to ask questions.

Discussing treatment options

Where treatment is required, we’ll discuss suitable options, expected costs and relevant considerations before you decide how you would like to proceed.

Ongoing care

Once the immediate problem has been addressed, preventive care and regular dental examinations can help identify future concerns earlier.
Have A Dental Problem?

You don’t need to know what treatment you need

Many dental problems can have several possible causes. If something doesn’t feel right, simply tell us what you’re experiencing and we can arrange an appropriate appointment to assess it.

Toothache or sensitivity

Persistent pain, sensitivity to hot or cold, or discomfort when biting can indicate an underlying dental problem that should be assessed.

Broken, chipped or cracked tooth

Damage can range from a small surface chip to a deeper fracture affecting the strength or internal structure of the tooth.

Lost filling or crown

A damaged or missing restoration can leave the underlying tooth vulnerable and may require repair or replacement.

Pain when chewing

Discomfort when biting or chewing may be associated with decay, a damaged tooth, bite problems, infection or other causes.

Wisdom tooth pain or swelling

Pain towards the back of the mouth, swollen gums or recurring inflammation may be associated with wisdom teeth.

Bleeding or swollen gums

Regular gum bleeding, swelling or tenderness can indicate inflammation and should not simply be ignored.

General Dentistry FAQs

General dentistry covers a broad range of preventive, diagnostic and restorative dental care. This can include examinations, fillings, gum care, crowns and bridges, root canal treatment, extractions, wisdom tooth assessment and management of common dental problems.

Not necessarily, but tooth decay can sometimes develop without causing pain in its earlier stages. Your dentist can examine the tooth and determine whether treatment is required.

No. Wisdom teeth do not automatically require removal. Extraction may be considered when they are causing problems such as pain, infection, damage to nearby teeth or other complications.

Contact the practice to arrange an assessment. Avoid chewing heavily on the affected tooth until it can be examined, particularly if the tooth feels weak, sharp or sensitive.

Many private health insurance policies provide benefits towards general dental treatment, but your rebate will depend on your policy, waiting periods and remaining limits. HICAPS instant claiming is available for eligible patients at Varsity Smiles.

Dental pain can sometimes be difficult to pinpoint. Tell us what you are experiencing when booking and your dentist can examine the area and investigate possible causes.

GENERAL DENTISTRY

Tooth-Coloured Fillings

Fillings are used to repair teeth affected by decay, wear, chips or other minor damage while blending naturally with the surrounding tooth.

When might it be considered?

Tooth decay

Small chips or fractures

Worn or damaged tooth structure

Replacing a damaged filling

What happens?

The damaged area is cleaned and prepared before a tooth-coloured material is placed, shaped and polished. The result is a restored tooth designed to look natural and function comfortably.

If you have a damaged tooth or suspect a cavity, we can assess the area and discuss suitable treatment.

GENERAL DENTISTRY

Dental Crowns & Bridges

Dental crowns can restore and protect teeth that are significantly weakened or damaged. Bridges can be used to replace certain missing teeth by supporting a replacement tooth between neighbouring teeth.

When might it be considered?

A cracked, worn or heavily damaged tooth

A tooth with a large existing restoration

Additional protection following some root canal treatments

One or more missing teeth

What happens?

Your teeth are assessed and prepared before a scan or impression is taken for your custom restoration.Once ready, the crown or bridge is fitted and adjusted for comfort and function.

If you have a damaged or missing tooth, we can assess which restoration options may be suitable.

GENERAL DENTISTRY

Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment may be recommended when the soft tissue inside a tooth becomes significantly inflamed or infected. The aim is to remove the affected tissue, clean and seal the inside of the tooth, and retain the natural tooth where appropriate.

When might it be considered?

Persistent or severe toothache

Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold

Infection or an abscess

Trauma affecting the dental pulp

What happens?

The affected tissue is removed, the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed, and the tooth is restored where appropriate.Treatment may take one or more appointments depending on the tooth.

If you are experiencing tooth pain or have concerns about a damaged tooth, we can help assess the cause.

GENERAL DENTISTRY

Tooth Extractions

A tooth may need to be removed when it is too damaged, decayed or otherwise unsuitable to retain.

When might it be considered?

Severe tooth decay

A badly broken or damaged tooth

Ongoing infection

A tooth that cannot be predictably restored

What happens?

The tooth is assessed and, where appropriate, removed under local anaesthetic. We’ll explain what to expect and discuss any relevant replacement options if needed.

If you have a painful or badly damaged tooth, we can assess the area and talk through your options.

GENERAL DENTISTRY

Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth can become impacted, grow at an angle or only partially erupt, sometimes causing pain, inflammation or problems with the neighbouring teeth.

When might it be considered?

Pain or swelling at the back of the mouth

Recurrent gum inflammation or infection

An impacted or poorly positioned wisdom tooth

Decay or damage affecting the wisdom tooth or nearby tooth

What happens?

Your wisdom teeth are assessed and, where needed, X-rays are taken to check their position. Depending on what we find, we may recommend monitoring the tooth or discussing removal.

If your wisdom teeth are causing pain, swelling or other concerns, we can assess the area and discuss your options.

GENERAL DENTISTRY

Gum Health & Periodontal Care

Healthy gums support healthy teeth. Bleeding, swelling or tenderness can be signs of gum inflammation or periodontal disease and are worth having assessed.

When might it be considered?

Bleeding when brushing or flossing

Swollen, red or tender gums

Persistent bad breath

Gum recession or loose teeth

What happens?

Your gums are assessed and cleaned where appropriate, with further periodontal treatment recommended if needed. We’ll explain what we find and how you can help manage your gum health at home.

If you’re concerned about bleeding, swollen or receding gums, we can assess the area and discuss suitable care.
