Tooth pain, swelling or a dental injury? Call Varsity Smiles and tell us what’s happened. Our team can help you understand the next step and check the earliest available appointment. For urgent problems, please phone rather than wait for an online reply. If you have trouble breathing or swallowing, severe mouth or neck swelling, or heavy bleeding that will not stop, call 000 or go to the nearest emergency department immediately.
The urgency depends on your symptoms. If you’re unsure, call and describe what has happened so we can help you choose the next step.
Toothache & Swelling
Severe or persistent toothache, painful gums or swelling can indicate a problem needing treatment. Facial swelling needs immediate assessment, especially with fever or feeling unwell.
Broken Teeth, Fillings & Crowns
Call about a cracked or broken tooth, or a filling or crown that has come out. Tell us about any pain, sensitivity or sharp edges. Avoid chewing on the affected area.
Knocked-Out or Loose Teeth
A knocked-out adult tooth needs immediate attention. Teeth that become loose or move after an injury also need urgent assessment. Follow the first-aid steps below for a knocked-out tooth.
Seek dental care immediately, ideally within 30 minutes. Even if more time has passed, still get help. Never put a baby tooth back in. If you’re unsure whether it’s an adult tooth, keep it in milk and take it to a dentist.
Pick up the tooth by the white crown. Avoid touching the root.
If dirty, gently rinse it in milk or saline. Do not scrub it.
If the person is alert and cooperative, gently replace the adult tooth in its socket without forcing it. Bite softly on a clean cloth to hold it.
If you cannot replace it, keep the tooth covered in milk and bring it with you immediately. Do not let it dry out or store it in water.
Need urgent dental care? Call us now.
Tell us your symptoms and when they started. We’ll advise on appointment availability. At your visit, your dentist will assess the problem and explain treatment options and expected costs. If we’re closed or cannot see you promptly, seek an after-hours dentist for urgent symptoms. For a knocked-out adult tooth, go to an emergency department if immediate dental care is unavailable.
You can change these choices at any time. Essential storage, including remembering your choice, stays on.
